Ohio volleyball players continue their winning ways

The Ohio Women’s Volleyball team started their 2015 season on fire. Coach Deane Webb has the women once again playing at a high level—currently holding a four-game lead on arch-rival Miami (OH) in the MAC East.

Since losing in five sets to Louisville in the Active Ankle Challenge, Ohio has won 11 straight contests, starting with a three-game sweep in the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational and eight consecutive wins to begin conference play.

Last weekend, the Bobcats came back for a two-game home stand in Athens – having not lost a set in four straight games.

After splitting the first two sets against the Cardinals, Ohio had to score the final three points of the fifth and final set to avoid an enormous mid-season let down against a low ranked divisional opponent.

In the win, three members of the Green and White had double-digit kills and three more had 10+ digs.

Ali Lake led the team with 18 kills, while Shelby Walker and Jaime Kosiorek combined for 23 more. Defensively, Meredith Ashy once again did a tremendous job keeping the ball in-play, tallying 22 digs. Mallory Salis and Abby Gilleland had 16 and 13 digs of their own, respectively.

The following day, Ohio was sharp on all edges against when they played host to the Toledo Rockets, winning in four sets.

After going up 2-1 on three close-scoring sets, Ohio finished the fifth frame on a dominating 20-5 run to extend their winning streak to 11 and remain perfect in conference play.

Ashy once again led the team in digs with 16, earning her MAC Volleyball Player of the Week Honors. Salis, Lake and Kosiorek all had double-digit kills, combining for 36 total. But this dominating play is not a new concept for the Bobcats.

Since 2013, the Green and White have been superb, specifically in their play within the Mid-American Conference. In that two-and-a-half season span, Ohio has an absurd record of 41-2 (playoffs included) against the rest of their conference.

As if it were necessary to validate that record further, take a look at the scores by which they won those 41 games.

[3-0]: 21

[3-1]: 15

[3-2]: 5

That means that Ohio has won those 41 games by a combined set score of 123-25.

The Bobcat volleyball team has shown no signs of slowing down as the women are well on their way to another no. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament at the conclusion of the regular season.

However, last year’s brutal and surprising end to their campaign still looms in the team’s mind. Ohio was 16-0 in conference play and rode a 17-game winning streak into the MAC Tournament last season, only to be upset by Western Michigan in the first round.
